Jerron Herman, photographed by Jayme Thornton

Dancer Jerron Herman is all about welcoming. As writer Meredith Fages wrote in Dance Magazine's March cover story:

While he creates primarily through the lenses of Blackness and disability, he creates for everyone. "There's nothing in what I do that you cannot consume; you just choose what to eat," he says. An interdisciplinary artist who works in dance, text and visual storytelling, Herman makes art because, he says, "my multiplicity wants to have a conversation with your multiplicity."

Now, he's welcoming all dancers to take his free virtual class on Dance Media Live! On Monday, March 29, at 4 pm Eastern, he'll be sharing an inside look at the phrases and concepts he's developed for his works and talking about his experiences in the field. Topics will range from disability aesthetics to researching for dance—with some fun anecdotes sprinkled in.

Click here to register, and submit any questions you'd like to ask him. All levels of dancers are welcome. The class and discussion will include live captions and ASL interpretation.

Teaching dance during the coronavirus pandemic has been challenging to say the least. Studio owners have found creative ways to continue classes, while prioritizing health and safety and juggling the stresses and financial difficulties of keeping a business afloat. Aggie Kimple, owner of The Dance & Music Design School in Cornwall, New York, understands the ongoing severity of COVID-19. Along with her husband and children, she had the virus in March 2020. For the most part, her family members have fully recovered, but even today, Kimple is dealing with lingering effects of the illness—something many are calling "long-haul COVID," though experts are still unsure why some people develop it. Despite it all, she's remained committed to her students, knowing the balm that dance can be in these uncertain times. Kimple shared her experience with Dance Magazine.

On March 13, schools closed, and our studio immediately went virtual, anticipating that it would just be for two weeks.

My husband, a lawyer, knew he'd be home for two weeks, too, so he decided to give up coffee. The first day, he had a raging migraine. Four or five days later, the headaches were still really horrible. We found out his partner at the law firm had developed COVID and was not doing well.

Then I started to have really bad headaches, and so did our two kids. We finally got our positive test results around April 9. Because we didn't have fevers, it was difficult to find a site that would test us.

Keerati Jinakunwiphat. Photos by Jayme Thorrnton

Between her distinctive presence as a dancer in Kyle Abraham's A.I.M and her own creative vision as a choreographer, Keerati Jinakunwiphat was a natural fit for Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch" list this year.

Now, you can take a free online class with the cover star of Dance Magazine's January issue through Dance Media Live! On February 11, at 12 pm ET, Jinakunwiphat will teach a 45-minute movement class, followed by a short Q&A with participants.

Her class will begin with combinations using the floor to discover a sense of groundedness, tactility and mobility, and to start playing with shifts of weight. As the class continues, movement will grow bigger as you explore different planes. Throughout her teaching, Jinakunwiphat focuses on how dancers can stay present as they take up space.

Since 1954, Dance Magazine has celebrated the living legends among us with the Dance Magazine Awards. This year, in light of deep reflections on racial equity inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, the selection committee decided to take a close look at exactly who the magazine has honored over the past seven decades. Unsurprisingly, the list is overwhelmingly white. Although it's grown more diverse in recent years, many brilliant artists of color have been left out for far too long.

So for 2020, in order to reckon with and take a step toward repairing that history, the committee chose an outstanding group of all-Black artists. A ceremony to celebrate this year's Dance Magazine Award recipients will take place virtually on Monday, December 7, with performances and presentations for each honoree. For ticket information, visit dancemediafoundation.org. I'm delighted to announce our incredible honorees for 2020:

I've had a complicated relationship with dance over the years—from a young girl hell-bent on pursuing a career, to a professional injured on the brink of success, to a grown woman who shunned the art form for years to avoid dealing with physical and emotional pain.

But in the midst of the pandemic, hit with personal loss and grappling with my own battle with illness, I was compelled to face my dance demons head-on. And what I discovered was that dance had been with me all along. And as I turned to others in pain, I realized I wasn't alone in experiencing this dance catharsis.
